Opinions on the Recent Staff Veto of the RTRAA
The Staff Team recently laid down a Staff veto on the Realer Town Rights Amendment Act (and the Willow Revivification Act, but Im not going to go into much detail on that). Ive found myself agreeing with much of the public sentiment on the matter, however, I wanted to take a moment to go into further detail on exactly why I feel the way I do on this.
When I was looking around at the public sentiment, I found one post in particular that I found myself particularly in agreement with, and that is the Dino News Network's post in the #news channel in the DC Discord. Now, I normally find myself disagreeing with the sentiment of the Dino News Network, however, this post I found to echo my issues exactly. In particular, I want to point towards the part which says "Staff puts their finger on the trigger, pulling in, they hesitate a moment. Is this the right call? Is it right to punish our animals for doing democracy? They cast this thought aside quickly, of course- Animals are just doing democracy wrong".
IRL, I serve a local Boy Scout Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster (I promise, this is related). At the Boy Scout level, the Scouts are meant to run most of the program through the Patrol Leaders, Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and other leadership roles. As the Scoutmaster of my troop says, our job is to make sure the youth dont do something that gets them killed. Effectively, the adult leaders' responsibility is to keep everyone safe, offer our advice, and to intervene when an adult is needed, not to run the program.
I believe the Staff Team should be due to serve a similar purpose. Their duty should not be to exert their personal opinions over law; That duty falls to to the Government. The Staff team should be responsible for moderating the server to uphold a decent community, issuing vetoes against flagrantly out of place or off theme policy (such as, for example, an amendment to turn DemocracyCraft into a Theocracy), and to perform the maintenance, development, and updating that a Minecraft server requires. And no, for those who may attempt to argue it, the RTRAA was not a flagrantly out of place policy, that would have required the RTRAA to provide the towns with an amount of power that it did not. The Staff team, from my perspective, seems to increasingly be utilizing its veto power to act as a fourth, all-powerful branch of government rather than a moderating entity for the server, and that concerns me for the ideas of democracy this server holds so high, so high as to put it in the name of the server.
