smirkymyjensThoughts on illegalizing casinos (as a casino owner)
My opinions based on what I've said and heard in the "Illegalize Casinos" petition during 2026-06-29.

No disrespect to anyone who I mention during this post.
Backstory of my DemocracyCraft "life" (skip past if you want to):
⠀I joined this server as a 'Jaronite' in the "Yeah_Jaron" wave. I spent my first while in queue for 5 hours to join the server. When I got in, I was thinking to myself, "is this the right server for me?" I immediately server found it hard to get straight as there were so many jobs, so many different things I could do, it was all too much.
⠀I began in a little apartment named "The Tortoise" trying to sell nether-related things such as gold and quartz in a chest-shop lease below. I was doing great until I found a casino at spawn. I tried it out, saw it was bummy odds and decided to go and continue what I was doing. I got myself an elytra, got myself gear, and felt pretty comfortable where I was.
⠀I went back to the casino here and there until one day I discovered something. The owner of this casino left the back of their slots open for the world to see, and I found it peculiar that target blocks were used in this casino design as you could activate them with bows and snowballs right? When the machine broke by being purchased too fast from, the item would not go into the barrel causing the comparator to turn off, resulting in nothing being able to function in the slot. I found that when you hit the target block in this state, you get a free cheeky little spin! I continued to do this for around a day or two, checking in whenever to see if any of the slots had been broken so I could grub off a bit of money if I got lucky.
⠀But then came an even bigger breakthrough. I was doing my routinely check of the slot machines, wanting to get some money from the free-spins, so I check to see if the machine is broken. Yup. I hit the target block, and... plop, I hear the item come out. What's this? The redstone torch turned back off allowing me to continuously hit it? I was shocked. I had only 2,500$ when I discovered this. I eventually cleared out 3 of the ~6 slot machines within the building, gaining a total of around 130,000$ in the process, all for free with no risk of getting sued as what I did abided by the laws.
⠀This allowed me to begin my own business. A casino business. I got myself a plot far into the city to create my casino, and later got myself a CBD plot aswell. Business was BOOMING. I eventually made an online casino where I closed a deal for an investor to get more money out of it, the business is still in the works but delayed due to my graduation happening and other sorts of stuff. Anyways, the online casino closed, and now I am left with what I have. As a 'Jaronite', I have 3 commercial plots, 2 CBD plots, and around 130,000$ with no money spent at all.
⠀
The petition. Illegalize Casinos by 'evefield':
I will bring up all of the points from myself, 'evefield', and others during the time I went to talk within the thread on the discord. All times I present will be in NST (UTC-3:30).
⠀
⠀I first began talking in the petition's thread at 2:24 PM with a quick comment:
⠀In short, I mean that the server has no affiliation with these casinos, and the player is given money to begin with. All casinos are optional to play, and their odds are listed to show that they are not money-making methods. This message is to a reply from 'evefield' when they brought up this prior at 12:27PM:
"because it is draining the accounts of new players into the pockets of casino owners" - 'evefield'
'evefield' brought up a point about how the children could be affected into possibly doing IRL (in real life) gambling, growing up with an addiction:
⠀I left it at that as I wasn't sure on if I should continue to argue about this as it seemed inevitable as it got posted in one of the announcement channels saying it hit 30 'AYE's.
⠀I came back later at 6:01 PM with another comment asking "does blackjack count as a skill or a luck game" to not get a really great response.
⠀Once again, I later come back at 10:03 PM, just to read through what people have said about, technically, my business. Throughout all the messages I read, one stuck with me and made me feel like I should comment more about this topic.
⠀I agreed with this completely. To be serious though, if you are joining DemocracyCraft, it is highly unlikely you have NEVER encountered gambling at any point previously in your lifetime. I decided to use this as my first real argument within the thread.
⠀I think this is a good argument to the first argument I read from 'evefield', being the children addicted to gambling message., as like I said above, there is zero chance that the first encounter of gambling in your life was on DemocracyCraft in a dropper slot machine.
⠀A big example of this being true is Hypixel Skyblock. It's on the same platform, Minecraft. The High Class Archfiend Dice lets you spend around 6 million coins for a chance to hit a 6 and get 100 million coins out of it, which is roughly a 5-10% house edge.
⠀The three other examples have major impact aswell, Fortnite was and is a hit game for kids, and there's even stereotypes about how kids steal their parent's credit card to buy V-Bucks on the game. 'Steal a Brainrot', a popular Roblox game played by MAINLY KIDS has boxes that you're able to open which have a percent to get a certain brainrot, and these can be purchasable with Robux, which is purchasable with real money. A study by the University of Sydney about Roblox games shows this. Pokémon, straight out the gate. The randomness and chance to get great cards through the packs has many similarities to gambling as it involves nice colors in the art, the cost to buy the pack, etc. Pokémon packs nowadays after the hype cost around 10$ per pack, and that's basically a scratch-off ticket but instead you get a card.
⠀'DocTheory' replied to my comment with two different messages:
"Listen, I mean Eve's argument to put it, and im not trying to disrespect it by saying it how I understand it. Just because so many other games or servers have it doesn't mean we should also encourage it. She stated that just because others do it doesn't mean we should also do it; we can be a place that discourages it and prevents it... ...I mean that's completely understandable and valid, and I can get behind that, it's just the execution I don't agree with" - 'DocTheory'
⠀We should not encourage gambling whatsoever, but one thing I'd note though is that the server isn't encouraging it to begin with. The players are, but the server itself is not. The second message as well is something I agree with as the way 'evefield' is getting this petition to sound is more personal than what should actually be done.
⠀I then brought up how there will be some bias against illegalizing casinos as I am a casino owner myself, but when I was at my peak with most of my gambling enterprises like my website I made, I was still pushing for stricter regulations against casinos. In Multiman155's running for president campaign, he was doing a Q&A with his supporters and I asked about gambling regulations. My point for the great addition of banning website casinos was "because its easier to go from say gnomestakes to searching “gambling canada”... ...than from minecraft... ...and having just a dropper in front of you".
⠀
⠀The rest of the arguments if you'd like to read are further down in the petition if you'd like to read both sides more.
Here for quick viewing though, I will state out my opinions on why casinos should not be made illegal, just so the post doesn't get too large with many quotes. This does not mean I am not supporting the regulation of casinos to a more strict degree, I am just putting it out there to not make the casinos illegal:
-- Many use it for recreational gambling and not for addiction, as eventually a player can get bored of the business they run and the work they do and want a fun free 'paycheck' IF they get lucky. {ex. .raitheguy,}
⠀
-- Helps the economy as many people with excess money ("rich") go and gamble for fun, allowing more money to be spread around out of their pocket.
⠀
-- The point of it "hurting children" and "spreading gambling addiction" can be there but keep in mind:
⠀
⠀⠀⠀-- DemocracyCraft would never be the first instance of a 'child' interacting with gambling. {ex. Steal a Brainrot, Pokémon, etc.}
⠀⠀⠀-- The sensory stimulation that real casinos gives, such as SFX, intense colors, and loud noises, are not present in the base dropper slot within DemocracyCraft.
⠀⠀⠀-- Illegalizing casinos may encourage more people into gambling as some join to only do 'illegal acts', which can cause more people to only spend their time gambling as it's 'beating the system'.
⠀
-- There can be many other ways to lessen the amount of casinos being created and the amount of addiction gained from these slots by:
⠀
⠀⠀⠀-- Having the items that are purchased and dropped contain discouraging messages, similar to cigarette packaging in real life.
⠀⠀⠀-- [my personal example] Have the person declare their top, main business is within the gambling industry. An example I provided which could cut down casinos is within this message here. This can be in reference on something 'evefield' brought up aswell, being this. It can help lessen the amount of casinos being made, as if their main business is not within the gambling industry, they are not able to make any sort of 'gambling machine' unless it's related to like random items for sale, such as heads/mystery boxes, and not towards 'money in-money out' games like slots.
⠀
⠀In-game dropper slots do not have a lot of the same function like website casinos or real casinos as for example, {no shame}, 'GnomeStakes', you were able to place any bet you want, choose from many different game modes, etc. which give more feeling to if you were playing on a real online casino.
⠀I'd also like to mention the more personal opinions that 'evefield' within the petition, showing it's more of hate towards casinos from themselves instead of wanting to help more. 'evefield' is pushing for the "illegalize casinos to remove the development of children's gambling addiction", yet some messages contradict this in a way like:
"I mean yes this has always been personal 😭 ur asking me what I think, I'm saying what *I* think"
⠀There are far better ways to address casinos in the game than simply relying on personal opinion and saying they should be made illegal. I believe the petition shouldn't be on illegalizing casinos, but more on making the regulation on casinos stricter, and have the entirety of the gambling scheme in DemocracyCraft to be more thought out. The thought on illegalizing casinos should be more thoughtful on the businesses that do run these, instead of outright banning them.
⠀Thank you for reading my post, and I'm assuming 'evefield' will put their own post out soon aswell. Hopefully this helps you understand how I feel about this petition, while also being able to look back at what was all said in the thread and see evefield's opinions too.
⠀
⠀(also let me know on your thoughts about this too, if you want to message me, my discord is smirkymyjens which i think is pretty obvious but yeah!)
Do YOU personally believe that casinos should be illegal. This is talking specifically around slot machines.
